  10. Just a question that came to my mind many times before:
  11. Why don't developers include the catalog description files in their
  12. distribution packages?
  13.  
  14. As I'm the author of the Hungarian version of AmigaOS locale, which will be
  15. included in the next Workbench releases, I like translating my favourite
  16. programmes to my native language. But this work often becomes very hard,
  17. because most of the developers only distribute an unfilled catalog translation
  18. file with their localized applications, and put a comment into it just like
  19. this: "If you'd like to see this program in your language, simply fill out the
  20. supplied .ct file, and send it back to my address. The next version will
  21. contain your translation among the others." And that is what I find impossible.
  22. My reasons are the following:
  23. 1) The translator simply don't know the length restrictions of some strings -
  24.    that are really important in some cases - because this information is only
  25.    available in the descriptions.
  26. 2) In many cases these applications are very slightly string-length adaptive
  27.    (sometimes not at all!), and this behaviour strengthens the previous
  28.    insufficience.
  29. 3) The tarnslator is unable to test his translation without being able to
  30.    create the runtime catalogs, so he will never see what he would have done
  31.    until it appears in the next release of the package. This can lead to
  32.    really great mess around the strings, as some behaviour of theirs become
  33.    visible only when they're applied in a particular situation. (And who
  34.    likes to release bullshit with his name written onto it?)
  35. 4) And finally, what is this all thing good for? What are the advantages of
  36.    keeping a catalog description secret?

  38. So I'd like to ask all of you developers, please add all the necessary files to
  39. the archives of your localized stuff! Keep in mind: localization is a great
  40. feature (even if it's not yet fully functional), but it can only be done
  41. perfect with your help...
